“Teaching Comprehension with Nonfiction Read Alouds” (3rd -6th grade)
Based on her book of the same title, Dawn will share her framework for presenting powerful read-aloud lessons that teach students the comprehension skills they need to read nonfiction. You’ll learn how to plan and present interactive read alouds of newspaper or magazines, articles, textbooks, informational books, and more. Dawn will also provide suggestions for choosing nonfiction texts, using read alouds across the curriculum and “just for fun,” as well as differentiating your lessons. Also available as a half day workshop. ($250)

“Using Picture Books as Mentor Texts” (3rd-8th grade)
In this hands-on workshop, educators learn how picture books can and should be an integral part of any elementary and middle school curriculum. A research-based model for incorporating picture books into the classroom is shared. Participants will learn how to use picture books as mentor texts in the reading and writing workshop, as well as content areas. Educators will leave the workshop with several lesson ideas they can immediately incorporate in their classrooms. Also available as a half day workshop. ($250)

“Make Your Reading/Writing Workshop REAL with Nonfiction” (3rd-8th grade)
Learn how to incorporate nonfiction reading and writing into your daily language arts program in this hands-on workshop. Participants will learn a research-based framework for incorporating nonfiction reading and writing into their reading/writing workshops. The framework includes nonfiction read alouds, nonfiction mentor texts for comprehension strategies and writers’ craft, as well as units of inquiry. Participants will leave the workshop with several lesson ideas for immediate implementation in their reading and writing workshop. Also available as a half day workshop. ($250)
